Supporting field operations in the Shallow Utilities division, the Lineman Apprentice will be responsible for assisting the Lineman in the installation and maintenance of electrical power systems (street lighting and 4 party trenching). A Lineman Apprentice is responsible for assisting the Lineman with providing efficient service in construction, operation, replacement, removal, and maintenance work on overhead and underground electrical distribution lines and substations while performing such work on lines, either dead or energized, at voltages up to and including 14,400 volts, phase to phase, and to perform similar and less skilled work as required.
General Responsibilities:
- Perform all the necessary activities in the construction and maintenance of energized and deenergized overhead and URD distribution lines.
- Patrol the line, check defective materials, equipment, or unsafe conditions, and notify Foremen or supervisor of problem areas.
- Inspect work after completion to ensure it has been done according to applicable specifications and codes.
- Understand considerable hazards that exist, including falls, electric shock, electric flash, automobile traffic, and falling objects. Understands and utilizes safety and protective equipment.
- Perform, as needed, all the duties of Groundman, Equipment Operator and Lineman. Ensure that trucks, tools, and assigned equipment are properly used and kept in good working order.
- Locate and determine sources of power outages.
- Terminate power infrastructure.
- Ensure the installation is done properly and timely with the Shallow Utilities crew.
- Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspection of vehicles to identify systems or parts of a vehicle that are not working properly, have failed, or have deficiencies that require attention.
- Safely operate a truck and trailer hauling heavy equipment and/or materials while adhering to the regulations on transport (Hours, Inspections, Etc.).
- Operate various hand tools, from crimpers to wire cutters; a Lineman needs to be adept at using tools to measure, cut, and splice together power lines.
- Supervise all excavations around live electrical infrastructure to ensure it is completed in a safe manner.
- Must be able to work with Enmax operations with regards to all hot work.
Technical Knowledge:
- Knowledge of electrical and building codes.
- Installing various types of power cables and wires.
- Making repairs to damaged power lines.
- Proficient in reading drafts, drawings, and prints.
- Interpreting and executing design drawings for installation of Shallow Utilities.
- Microsoft Office proficiency (Outlook, SharePoint).
- Ability to analyze and apply engineering principles to construction challenges, problems, and issues.
- Knowledge of climbing gear—climbing poles to access overhead power lines—is a common responsibility of a Lineman. Familiarity with straps, gaffs and climbing spikes is required.
Training and Certifications:
- Valid Standard First Aid Certificate.
- Ground Disturbance Training.
- Basic Hoisting and Rigging Training.
- Fall Arrest Training.
- Confined Spaces Training.
- Logbook Training for Hauling.
- Transporting Dangerous Good Certificate.
- Arial Lift and Device Rescue Training.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:
Qualifications & Experience
- Must be enrolled in an approved Apprenticeship Program (4th Year and actively taking the required courses). Provide documentation of hours.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience (specifically, shallow utilities infrastructure experience).
- Previous experience with Fortis and Enmax installations, preferred.
- Understands and employs relevant building codes, city specifications, and industry specifications.
- Vehicle is required; a valid Class 3 Alberta Operator’s License is preferred with a clean Driver’s abstract (as per Company Policy).
- Ability to analyze and apply engineering principles to construction challenges, problems, and issues.
- Proficient in reading drafts, drawings, and prints.
- Ability to interpret and execute design drawings for installation of Shallow Utilities.
