Volker Stevin Contracting provides expert project management services drawing from, and combining all in-house resources to provide exceptional products and client service.

This division specializes in multi-disciplinary projects involving close coordination with a multitude of subcontractors, utility owners, local, municipal, and provincial traffic operations to ensure their collaborative efforts result in the highest quality, “special” projects. A Special Project typically involves underground utility installation, road building, asphalt paving of roads and parking lots. Structural installations, coordination of subcontractors and utility owners is also involved. And of course, the logistical elements of cost control, scheduling and overseeing the entire project from start up to completion.

Over the years Volker Stevin has forged very strong working relationships with highly skilled subcontractors in earthworks, concrete, landscaping, asphalt milling, fencing, street lighting, retaining walls, irrigation, electrical, metal fabrication, conduit, and electronic control systems installation. We take great pride in the mutual respect of these firms, and will continue to utilize their expertise and to avail ourselves to new opportunities, innovative products, and new technologies.

West Calgary Ring Road - Design Build 1 (DB1)

As a partner of the General contractor (EllisDon), Volker Stevin is contracted to complete the underground utilities and all the road works including concrete.

It is an overall $463-million project of which Volker Stevin is a major player of that valuation. The North Project of the West Calgary Ring Road is the construction of the section of 3 km of six and eight-lane divided freeway between Old Banff Coach Road and the Trans-Canada Highway, 5 km of Highway 1, and 1 km of Valley Ridge Boulevard including two interchanges at Highway 1 and at Valley Ridge Boulevard. Once completed, this section of the Calgary Ring Road will connect to the south portion of the West Calgary Ring Road and the Bow River Bridge twinning to fully complete the ring road and will provide free-flow travel around the city.

Service Scope

Volker Stevin was contracted to complete the underground Utilities and all the road works on the West Calgary Ring Road DB1 project. The project is managed by Volker Stevin’s Special Projects division, which is specialized in multi-discipline projects with a designated a group of project managers to manage all the aspects of the job to fulfill the contract requirements.

As the project is considered a design and build, VSC is responsible for quality control, quality assurance, schedule coordination, survey and all other required documentation.

Some of the specific scopes completed by VSC underground crews include: deep underground storm system installation, bridge culvert installation, culvert installations, pond storm system installations, several auger shots, waterline realignments and catch basins install. Some of the specific scopes completed by VSC road crews include: GBC placement and new ACP installation on highways, service roads, detours and pathways. The concrete curb + gutter and the concrete walks are subcontracted and managed by VSC.

East Village Redevelopment

About

The East Village Redevelopment Project was undertaken for the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC). CMLC was incorporated in 2007 to implement the Rivers District Revitalization Plan. The overall program consisted of twelve phases redeveloping Calgary’s East Village along the Bow and Elbow rivers from 6th Street East to 3rd Street and from the Bow River to 9th Avenue SW. The project master plan was to create a riverfront destination with mixed-use infrastructure integrated with restored historical buildings that retain the iconic landmarks of the area. Since the CMLC’s inception Volker Stevin has successfully completed 19 contracts.

Service Scope

The surface reconstruction included a modern urban streetscape with numerous inviting architectural enhancements including roadway surfacing with large amounts of paving stone, coloured concrete, outdoor furniture, and specialty porous asphalt. Streetscaping was complete with streetlighting, landscaping and custom public art installations. Many of these feature art pieces are focal points of the area and required intricate coordination to construct and integrate into the overall construction. Volker Stevin Contracting has also completed multiple site servicing contracts which included surface removal and restoration, various connectivity improvements, such as the 4th Street cycle track, and the construction of community placemaking spaces, such as 5th Street Square.

17th Avenue Major Road Reconstruction

About

This project was centered on the replacement of old and failing watermains and sanitary sewers, many of which are approaching 100 years old. With significant disruption to the surface to install the deep utilities, the roadway – which was reaching the end of its useful life – was being fully reconstructed to improve the pedestrian realm and multi-modal transportation. Numerous other enhancements to the vibrant 17th Avenue corridor such as the burial of overhead utilities, upgraded landscaping and lighting, improved intersection geometry, and the addition of pedestrian plazas were included in the project.

Service Scope

Volker Stevin Contracting was retained as the General Contractor responsible for safety, quality, scheduling and overall coordination of the entire project. Specific scopes directly completed by VSC crews include the replacement of deep underground utilities, asphalt roadways, catch basins, and subdrains. Landscaping, electrical, concrete walks, decorative concrete surfacing, and removal scopes were subcontracted and managed by our project management teams.
